Yesterday night, in Las Vegas, Nevada; America’s largest mass shooting took place during a country music festival. As of writing this post on November 2, 2017, there is a reported death count of 58 people, and 500+ injured individuals. The shooter, 64 year old Stephen Paddock, then took his own life on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay.
By far, this is now recorded as the worst mass shooting in American history. It’s tragic, it’s numbing, and most of all, it’s a stark reminder of the dark realities of life which we Americans are not accustomed to happening in our homeland.
I woke up this morning as usual, driving to school, taking notes for my Statistics class; and drove back home after that to run a couple errands. When I finally got home, this is when I started noticing something was wrong.
I heard the television on, and the news reporting the horrendous news.
The shooter, Stephen Paddock, was described as a “lone wolf” who was retired and was an avid hunter. The strangest part of it all, is that as of writing this post, there are no clear background “red flags” that would indicate that he would have ever committed such an atrocity. He was, by all other accounts, just “another guy”. But of course, he isn’t just “another guy”. No, he was mentally disturbed and sick.
22,000 people were attending the country music festival the night the shooting happened. Many of the attendees were unaware of the shooting initially. Many eye witnesses interviewed after the shooting, told reporters that they thought it was firecrackers going off. But most of them realized that they didn’t see any firecrackers going off mid-air. Thus, this is when people began to panic and start to rush out of the vicinity as quickly as possible.
As reported on the television news networks, Stephen Paddock was on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay. He had shot through 2 windows of his suite. He had been there for at least 4 days before he committed this atrocity. Las Vegas Police Officers have stated that he had been gambling the days before his shooting.
He lived in Mesquite, Nevada.
As the story unfolds further over the next couple of weeks, many new information will uncertainly unfold as investigation is further pursued with this horrible act of terrorism.
May god watch over those affected directly by this tragedy, and may everyone remember to appreciate your loved ones during this time of unrest. I love you all~
